A man who barricaded himself in a Garland hotel room and threatened to shoot intruders surrendered peacefully to police after hours of negotiations Thursday.

Joel Freeman, a 40-year-old resident of Fate, in Rockwall County, will be booked into Garland Jail on multiple felony warrants, including charges of theft and evading police.

Police had been called to the Quality Inn and Suites off Interstate 30 near Bass Pro Road just before 2 p.m. Thursday, Garland Police Lt. Pedro Barineau said.

When police attempted to communicate with Freeman, “He said, `If anyone comes through the door, I’ll shoot,’ ” Barineau said.

Given the threat, a SWAT team was mobilized. After hours of negotiations, Freeman left the room around 8:30 p.m. and was taken into custody.
